Christmas is less than two weeks away! Are you already in christmas mood? If not that's ok because I'm pretty sure you will be after learning how to paint a christmas tree with me! 😍

What you need to paint a christmas tree:

  • watercolor paper
  • watercolor brush
  • 2 jars of water (one to rinse your brush, one for clean water)
  • watercolors
  • paper towel

These things can be quite useful too, but you don't need to have them:

  • tape
  • masking fluid
  • pencil

Now let's start with preparing our paper!

You can start by sketching out the outlines of the tree and where the snow will be by using a pencil. I outlined the branches, the snow, some shadows and some circles for the ornaments and lights, so that I know exactly where to paint what and won't feel stressed or lost. If you need a reference picture, you'll find millions in the internet!

After that I used liquid masking fluid to cover up the lightest areas in the painting, the top of the tree, the ornaments and you can even sprinkle little dots that you can turn into snow later (if your masking fluid is liquid enough)!

Let it dry and and apply water to the backside and the front of the paper. (If you use a watercolor block, you don't really need to do that!) Applying water to both sides of the paper and making it fully soaked up in water will probably make your paper stick to your board or wherever you place it all by itself, so you don't need to tape it down.

Now that your paper is prepared let's paint our christmas tree together!
