Are you looking for a fun and easy way to paint a festive Christmas tree in watercolor this holiday season? This simple step-by-step tutorial will guide you through creating a glowing, snow-covered tree that’s perfect for winter! With just a few easy techniques and some bright colors, you can paint a tree that will impress your friends and family.
Step 1: Sketch Your Christmas Tree Outline
Before diving into the paint, let’s start with a quick sketch. Sketching your tree outline helps avoid getting lost during the painting process and ensures your final painting stays well-organized.
- Center your tree on the paper since it will be the main focus.
- Begin with the top of the tree and sketch each branch, making the tree wider as you move downward.
- Don’t forget to outline where the snow will sit on the branches and where you want the shadows to fall.
Pro Tip: Use a reference image to guide your sketch! It will help you achieve a natural look.
Before moving on, lightly erase your pencil lines so they won’t be too visible under the paint.

Step 2: Preserve Light Areas with Masking Fluid
Next, let’s preserve the areas where we want bright lights and snow using masking fluid. This step helps to protect the white of the paper from being painted over.
- Cover the top of the tree and the areas where the ornaments or glowing lights will be.
- You can also sprinkle small dots of masking fluid to create snowflakes falling around the tree.
Once your masking fluid is dry, it’s time to start painting!

Step 3: Apply a Light Blue Background
For a simple yet striking background, we’ll use Indigo Blue. This deep, rich color creates a wintry atmosphere and contrasts beautifully with the glowing lights on the tree.
- Start with a light wash of Indigo Blue, covering the entire background, including the tree.
- Tilt your board slightly to allow the paint to flow downward and create a natural gradient.
- Add more concentrated Indigo Blue to the left and right sides to suggest other trees in the distance, keeping the area around the main tree lighter.
Let everything dry completely before moving on.

Step 4: Paint the Ornaments and Glowing Lights
Now it’s time to bring the tree to life by painting the ornaments or glowing lights.
- Choose bright colors like yellow, red, and blue to outline the circles you masked earlier.
- Carefully paint around these lights, leaving the white of the paper untouched for the lightest areas.
Allow the paint to dry fully before continuing.

Step 5: Paint the Christmas Tree
Now for the main event—painting the Christmas tree! For this step, you’ll switch between a deep green paint and the Indigo Blue from the background to create a realistic and dimensional tree.
- Start at the top with a dark shade of green, painting the branches and pine needles.
- Blend the green paint around the glowing lights you painted earlier to keep the effect soft and luminous.
- Remember to leave areas for the snow, using the negative painting technique. Instead of painting the snow directly, paint around it to create its shape.
As you work your way down the tree, continue blending colors and building depth.

Step 6: Add Shadows and Details to the Snow
Now, let’s give the snow more shape by adding shadows.
- Use a clean, wet brush to lightly blend out the green paint where it meets the snow, and add subtle shadows under the snow-covered branches.
- Keep some areas of the snow completely white to give the impression of light hitting the snow.
Let everything dry completely.

Step 7: Remove the Masking Fluid & Final Touches
Once your painting is dry, carefully remove the masking fluid to reveal the bright, untouched areas underneath. Notice how vibrant the lights and snow look!
To make the lights glow even more:
- Blend the colors inward toward the white circles, using a little water to soften the transition.
- If needed, add a touch of white gouache to enhance the brightness.
Now, you can choose how detailed you want to make your tree. Add a few extra lines and brushstrokes to define the needles or leave it loose for a more abstract look.
Finally, for some extra holiday magic, sprinkle white gouache to create a snow effect in the background.
